![]() ![]() The purpose is to use the park as a connector of neighborhoods, forestry student Haley Gilbert, one of the site’s creators, said at a gathering last week for the site’s launch. At the other end of New Haven is another summit with a park called West Rock. The new site, East Rock Park inside & out, was the outcome of a project done by a group of students at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. We especially like to visit the park in the fall with the changing leaves and the color of the red basalt rock with the autumn sun against it. There are several hiking trails, some of which lead up to other peaks within the park. The park is roughly bounded by Livingston Street, Davis Street, State Street and the Mill. You can see all the way to Long Island across the sound and most of New Haven. The 425-acre park is located on the New Haven / Hamden border. At the top of the monument is a large statue called the Angel of Peace that was recently restored. At the summit, you will find the 112 foot high Soldier's and Sailor's Monument that was erected in 1887 to honor New Haven residents from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mwexican War, and the Civil War. From November to March, the road is closed Monday through Thursday. The road is open daily from April to the end of October. ![]() There is an access road to the summit found at entrance to the park near the Hamden town line. A popular community destination in New Haven, Connecticut, East Rock Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. East Rock Park is a wonderful place to visit for hiking, having a picnic, or just sitting back and admiring the view from the 366 foot summit. Mostly residential, but still plenty to do (a few restaurants/cafes, coffee shops, beer hall, gym, laundromats). ![]()
